I've been back from maternity leave a little over a month now.  I'm so thankful for all of my wonderful students and families.  My teaching schedule is pretty full- I just have a small block of time on Thursdays that I would like to fill.
I recently gave my website a makeover as well...what do you think??
My next steps are to find more time (ha!, with a 3 month old baby) to practice my own music- hopefully getting back out to some open mics soon and start writing and recording some new material.
NEW SONG!! Check out my new single "Home" available on Musicoin now:
https://musicoin.org/…/0x0581108d0a1c28271f9d995d35a3a199f5…
It will be available on all other streaming/ download services starting next Friday (Dec. 1st).
This song marks a change in the writing/ recording process for me. I've always written songs by myself (vocals plus piano/ guitar/ uke) and then fleshed it out and recorded with a live band at the studio. For this song I wrote and recorded all vocals and instruments myself at my home studio. (Mixing was done at Soul Haven Studios in Va Beach).
I hope to post at least one Christmas cover on Youtube in the next couple weeks before the baby gets here!
I'll be taking about 2 months off for maternity leave, but I am looking forward to more writing, recording, performing and teaching in 2018!
New year, new website updates!  I've moved the upcoming shows to their own page (see "Shows" above). I've also added a studio page.  One of my goals is to do more recording at home.  I've been fortunate enough to work on a few different projects at my home studio now, so I feel ready to offer my services to more people. :)  I'm hoping to work with acoustic artists, record vocals/ voice-overs, and especially write and record custom compositions or arrangements.
I'm looking for a couple more students right now as well, so let me know if you want lessons!
So I have finally conceded...at many people's urges I now have a facebook page. It's facebook.com/musicbynell. Sean helped set it up for me...it syncs with my twitter- nice and easy! In other news...trying to get some shows booked for summer.  Sean and I have been honing our acoustic set, getting a good response. Doing some busking as well; you might see us around downtown Hampton events or in Norfolk. Hope you all can come see us play sometime :)

We're getting close! Most of the tracking for the album is done- 12 songs! Just have to record some harmonies, do some programming and mixing... My goal was Thanksgiving-that might not happen- but defintely before Christmas! I'll keep you posted here, and on twitter. I'm also starting to play out at open mics every week now.

Well, since my last post 2014 has ended and I am still working on the new album. I guess I've been busy with things in life besides music, but at the end of the day I know that's just an excuse.

I did accomplish something musical!...I recorded an EP of my dad's favorite hymns as a Christmas/ birthday gift. It was a great exercise in music theory and composition, as most of them I had to transpose to a different key and rework in my own acoustic style. It was also great practice in recording at home with my new audio/midi interface...I really learned a lot. You can hear the fruits of my labor on my youtubechannel.

I have been slowly but surely writing songs for my next album. I think it is better this way.

Welcome to my new website! I wish I would have done this years ago! I'm still trying to decide it it's too much or how I can improve it.

I decided to make a website since I am in the process of writing some new songs, and just like last time, I want to make sure I do everything I can to make this album a success. One thing I thought I could improve was having a real website, and I wanted to make it myself. I read some books from the library about HTML and CSS and took an online course in web design, but ultimately I realized coding from scratch is a stupid amount of work. Thus I discovered and downloaded Kompozer, a WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") website builder that is a free program similar to Dreamweaver.

Right now I've got three songs completely finished, with several more in various stages of completion. In the coming weeks I will be hashing those out and recording rough drafts at home. Then I need to find a bass player and lead guitarist, and also find a suitable local studio to record. My hope is to release the album sometime this fall.
